Early Bird Event:
We have reserved two university vans for local transportation and I’m guessing that there may be a few private vehicles available if we need them. Our early bird event will be a barbecue at nearby Thorpe Park on Wednesday evening from 5pm – 7pm. After dinner we will head just up the hill from the Park to visit Lowell Observatory, the Exhibit Hall, and attend an 8pm program, followed by viewing opportunities. Return to NAU by 9pm.
Banquet:
The banquet will be held Thursday evening at Black
Bart’s
Steakhouse. Two vans have been reserved for transportation
and we may need a couple of private vehicles to help
out. They have a musical review provided by students
at NAU.
Field Trip:
Our field trip (Saturday) will be a full day adventure (slightly over 200 miles) to the North
Rim of the Grand Canyon, provided by Open Road Tours. In many respects, the North Rim is very different from the South Rim and mid-September will be a beautiful time to visit. And yes, some sacrifice on your part will be necessary. In order to maximize our time at the North Rim, we need to depart at 6:30am.
In anticipation of the early departure, Lloyd, manager,
at "The Inn" will provide coffee, muffins, and
fruit before we leave. There will be a couple of bathroom
stops along the way. In addition, I’ll be bringing
some "mostly" healthy snacks and water for mid-morning
and the late afternoon return. A box lunch will be
included…let me know if you are a vegetarian. I have
arranged for an NPS ranger to address our group while
we eat lunch.
Then you will have some free time before we depart about 3:00pm. I have asked Open Road Tours to skip the dinner break on the return so we can have more time at the North Rim. Yes, there will be food so you won’t starve on the return, which should be about 8:00 – 8:30pm.
I will need to provide Open Road Tours with a list
of names by September 1st. The field trip is limited
to 50 participants.
Optional Things to do:
Museum of Northern Arizona
Grand Canyon
National Park – South Rim
Wupatki National Monument
Sunset Crater Volcano
Walnut Canyon National Monument
USGS Flagstaff facility
Meteor Crater
Hualapai
Rafting in the Grand Canyon – one day trip
about $289.00
Riordan Mansion State Park
Grand Canyon Railway
Pre-conference options:
On Wednesday morning, I would like to offer a brief
trip to Walnut Canyon National Monument located 4 miles
east of Flagstaff. (via private vehicles). We will
depart "The Inn at NAU" at 9am and return by noon.
By returning at noon, the Executive Board can participate
if they choose!
Post-conference options:
On the Monday following the conference, I would like
to offer a day trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon
(via private vehicles). Departure can be early because
you will have had Sunday to rest! And we will make
a full day of it, so plan to fly out on Tuesday!
