Mary Lynette Larsgaard was the map librarian’s map librarian.  Scores of map librarians used her book, Map Librarianship: An Introduction, as the guide to learn their craft and hone their skills.  She was an expert cataloger co-authoring and co-editing manuals, articles, and books on the subject.  Mary passed away in Santa Barbara on July 18, 2017.  It seems only fitting to honor her by creating a MARC record in her honor with Mary as the “thing” that is described.  Paige Andrew, her frequent collaborator, created the base record with additions by fellow colleagues, Louise Ratliff, Tim Kiser, and Susan Moore.  Reading this record gives us a deeper understanding of her expertise and her impact on this small community of librarians who desire more than anything to describe, steward, created access to, and revel in all things cartographic and spatial.

545 0    Map librarian extraordinaire. Born in Dickinson, North Dakota, left Earth peacefully in Santa Barbara, California in 2017. Mary’s family moved from Dickinson to Hoyt Lakes, in the Iron Range of Minnesota, when she was in middle school. She received her BA in geology from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1968. Mary went on to study Library Science at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and graduated in 1969. She started her career as a map librarian/assistant documents librarian at Central Washington State College [now Central Washington University] in Ellensburg in 1969. In 1976, Mary decided to work on a Master’s degree in geography at the University of Oregon in Eugene and in 1977 she became a graduate teaching assistant in the documents department. She finished her degree in 1978 and then took a position as Map Librarian at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. In 1984, she was appointed Assistant Director for Special Collections in that library. Mary’s next stop was as the Assistant Head of the Map and Imagery Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1988. She retired from UCSB with emeritus status in 2009. Along the way, she was the leader of three important American map library organizations: Western Association of Map Libraries (and she was also editor of its journal), the American Library Association’s Map and Geography Round Table, and the Special Libraries Association’s Geography and Map Division. Mary published many articles, won several grants, and held major offices in ALA cataloging committees.  She was the co-founder, with Paige Andrew, of the Journal of Map & Geography Libraries: advances in geospatial information, collections & archives, and she co-authored RDA and Cartographic Resources with Paige Andrew and Susan Moore.  Mary also mentored many map librarians and map catalogers and was a great friend to all, whether within the profession or outside of it.
