G-Schedule Subject Cutter Index 2019 (link downloads PDF of Index)
html version below
Also published in the Map Librarians’ Toolbox

Librarians who catalog and classify maps every day are intimately familiar with the subject cutters for the Library of Congress’ G schedule (2019). However, librarians who catalog maps occasionally may often find themselves scratching their heads. Is a map showing taxing districts classed with maps showing administrative districts, or is there another subject cutter for taxing districts? Without the search capabilities of Cataloger’s Desktop, a librarian may have to scan the entire list of the Subject Subdivisions, found starting on page 539 of the current G schedule, or find other cataloging records on the topic and use the subject cutter assigned by other librarians, and hope that they used the appropriate cutter for the map. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an index to the subject cutters in the G Schedule?

This article contains a subject index to the Subject Subdivisions found in the 2019 edition of the Library of Congress’ Classification Schedule G. It was created by copying the entire subject list, dividing the descriptions found for individual cutters (e.g. .A15 Business districts, center, or downtown of cities) and adding the appropriate cutter for each item. In the case of the .A15 cutter, the index contains a listing for: Business districts, cities, Central areas of cities and Downtowns of cities. In addition, a listing was added for Cities, business districts, Cites, central areas and Cities, downtowns. In cases where individual sites, such as National Forests, are classed geographically, the user is referred to Geographic Cutters (G Cutters, 2019). It is hoped that other occasional map catalogers will find the index useful in their work.
