2018 Pre-Conference Workshop

Online Map Indexes:

Faster, Better Access to Map Sets and Aerial Photographs

Paper indexes marked up with sharpies and sheet lists attached to bibliographic records are now widely acknowledged to provide inadequate access to map sets.  As sets are moved into remote storage and migrate to digital formats, map-driven online finding aids are being integrated into workflows at a number of institutions.  In this 4-hour workshop, participants will hear the background of why transforming our finding aids is essential for service. We will create GIS-driven indexes for quadrangle-based map sets and overlapping aerial photographs.  Those with AGO accounts will publish our indexes and build web map apps. Finally, we will learn how to package our index data for re-use in digital library systems and collaborative indexing projects.
